About this collection

WSU Evergreen (Student Newspapers), 1892-

These Evergreens are housed in Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections in the Terrell Library at WSU.

The Daily Evergreen:

Washington State University, then the Washington Agricultural College and School of Science, began classes on January 13th, 1892, and its first student-published newspaper, the College Record, was published the next month. The College Record was printed monthly throughout 1892 and the 1892-1893 school year.  The next student newspaper, the Evergreen, began in Spring of 1895 and has been published regularly since.  Today the newspaper is published five days a week during the school year and is known as the Daily Evergreen, although "Daily" did not become part of the title until 1951, when it became a four days per week paper.

The Collection:

Individual pages from Evergreen (and College Record) issues are compiled here, dating back to 1892.  A few additional student-published newspapers are included. Issues document the evolution of the Washington State University campus, activities, faculty, and student body from its earliest days. Evergreen issues in this collection can also be accessed in microfilm in the Holland Library at WSU at call number AN48.P8 C65x; most of the images here are scanned from physical preservation copies held in the WSU Libraries Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections (WSU 1).  Issues from the 1967-1969, 1977-1978, and 1979-2001 years are scanned from issues held at WSU's Office of Student Media. Issues 2002 forward are primarily born-digital.  Missing issues were scanned from microfilm, but some issues (about 44) are not available to us in any format and are currently lost to history; those are listed at the bottom of this page. We anticipate adding new issues annually, adding in the full run of a year during the following January or February.  At the moment the collection stops in August 2016; the remainder of 2016 will be added in with the 2017 issues in early 2018.

The collection also includes a few "unoffical" student newspapers, approximately 60 issues of alternative papers produced by students unaffiliated with the Evergreen.  As a general rule, to merit inclusion they had to be produced primarily by WSU students, and had to have an intended audience of the entire university (e.g. organizational newsletters will not be found here).  These include Upstream (1939-1941), Free Press (1962-1963), The Borderline (1964), 'SBlood (1967) and Scorn (1968-1969), Three Forks Press (1970), Burgerville Blues (1970), Publick Occurrences (1984-1985), and others.  Digitization has also begun elsewhere on the WSU Vancouver student newspaper, the VanCougar, beginning with 1990 issues and moving forward chronologically.

Searching the Database:

Entering search terms in the box located at the top of the page will search across the full text of all newspapers. To read through an individual issue, select Browse This Collection (or a year in the table below) and then click on the appropriate date. Search results are displayed as a series of thumbnail images that may be browsed. To view a larger image and its corresponding description, click on the thumbnail. An option to return to this home page for this collection is provided in the banner, as is a link to a page where you can conduct a joint search of the Evergreens, Chinooks, PowWows and Hilltopics, and other print WSU history resources.

As this database is now extremely large, doing an Advanced Search (at the top of the page) may help. If you want to search within a particular year or decade, do an Advanced Search, enter your keywords into the box, select "Add Another Field" under that, and into the new box enter your year (or the first three digits of your decade) followed by an asterisk, and change the field to Title. For example, if you enter 1934* in the Title field then you will be searching for items which include any 'word' starting with 1934 in their title. As all issues are titled in the format "Evergreen YYYY-MM-DD", that Search example would pull up any Evergreen dated in the year 1934.

Creating the Database:

University Archivist Mark O'English managed the project, designed the metadata schemas, created descriptions, and created this page. Individual print pages were scanned as 300 dpi pdf files on a Zeutschel OS 14000 A0 LS by Megan Bridge, Katrina Burch, Samantha Case, Jessica Bailey Clements, Morgan Clendenning, Bailey Dugan, Hamid Esmaeillou, Mohammad Ghaedi, Chris Halderman, Jason Hogstad, Kaitie Jacobs, Kristine Leier, Evelyn Moos, Mirra Moran, Renee Torres, Cooper Turberville, and Kaitlyn Van Vleet. Microfilm pages were scanned and OCRed as 300 dpi pdfs on an e-Image Data ScanPro 2000 microform scanner by Mark O'English. Cindy Ellis and Alex Merrill provided technical support for CONTENTdm. Jessica Bailey Clements designed the banner.
