About this collection

WSU Faculty / Staff Newspapers, 1971-2009

These newspapers are housed in Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections in the Terrell Library at WSU.

The University Bulletin, Bulletin/Calendar, WSU Week, and WSU Today:

Washington State University, then the Washington Agricultural College and School of Science, began classes on January 13th, 1892.  While various means were used over the years to communicate with employees, the size of the campus and the affordability of newsprint eventually led the campus to publish a faculty/staff newspaper.

University Bulletin: October 1, 1971 to June 7, 1974.
Bulletin/Calendar:  September 6, 1974 (vol. 1 no. 1) to August 11, 1989 (vol. 15 no. 38).
WSU Week: August 25, 1989 (vol. 1 no. 1) to July 13, 2001 (vol. 12 no. 34).
WSU Today: August 24, 2001 (vol. 13 no. 1) to February 6, 2009 (vol. 20 no. 12).
From 2009 to present, news is published online-only (, with notifications pushed to employees through emails containing headlines and article links.

The Collection:

Individual pages from faculty/staff newsletter issues are compiled here, from 1971 to 2009.  Issues document 38 years of the evolution of the Washington State University campus, activities, and faculty, with a focus on employee issues.   Most of the pages were scanned from spare copies donated by University Communications, then cut into individual pages for ease of scanning, and subsequently discarded.  Physical preservation copies of all issues are held in the WSU Libraries Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections (WSU 193 & WSU 176).

While there were other earlier "newspaper light" publications, notably WSU Calendar, there is no immediate plan to go back and digitize those.  Print copies of these can be found in MASC.

Searching the Database:

Entering search terms in the box located at the top of the page will search across the full text of all newspapers. To read through an individual issue, select Browse This Collection (or a year in the table below) and then click on the appropriate date. Search results are displayed as a series of thumbnail images that may be browsed. To view a larger image and its corresponding description, click on the thumbnail. An option to return to this home page for this collection is provided in the banner.

To browse all digitized issues from a given year, click on that year:
1970 1971 1972 1973 1974 1975 1976 1977 1978 1979
1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989
1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999
2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009

As this database is now fairly large, doing an Advanced Search (at the top of the page) may help. If you want to search within a particular year or decade, do an Advanced Search, enter your keywords into the box, select "Add Another Field" under that, and into the new box enter your year (or the first three digits of your decade) followed by an asterisk, and change the field to Title. For example, if you enter 1994* in the Title field then you will be searching for items which include any 'word' starting with 1994 in their title. As all issues are titled in the format "Newspaper Name YYYY-MM-DD", that Search example would pull up any employee newsletter dated in the year 1994.

Creating the Database:

Individual print pages were scanned as color 300 dpi pdfs on a Ricoh Aficio MP 4002 scanner by Kaitlyn Van Vleet, Samantha Case, and James Feller. Alex Merrill provided technical support for CONTENTdm. University Archivist Mark O'English managed the project, designed the metadata schemas, created descriptions, and created this page.
