Title |
Steel Closure Gate |
Title Caption |
All-steel closure gates in place at spillway diversion channels Nos. 34, 36, and 38. The gates were placed on the upstream side of the dam only; the bottoms of the diversion channels were above the tailwater elevations, consequently gates were not required on the downstream side of the dam. However, on a few occasions, the tailwater surface was high enough to cause some backwash in the gaps. Timber bulkheads and sand bags were then used. |
Description |
Engineers designed these huge closure gates to block sections of the diversion trenches for concrete pours that built the Grand Coulee Dam one channel at a time. |
