Description
From the Lewis Wells Sutton Collection . Lewis Wells Sutton (1839-1914) was born in Ohio , and later moved to Iowa . In 1861 , at 21 years of age , he enlisted as a private with Company I , 4th Iowa Infantry Regiment . He was taken prisoner of war at the battle of Shilo , but was later released . He was promoted to Full Sergeant Major in 1863 , and mustered out in 1864 . Two younger brothers also enlisted , Jacob (1844-1862) died during the conflict , while Roland (1844-?) survived and eventually moved to Portland , Oregon . Sutton's meticulous journals and letters to his sister , Susannah , paint a vivid picture of a Union soldiers life on the Civil War's western frontier . In 1868 , Lewis Sutton married Jemema Alice Thomas (1848-1923) in Mt . Pleasant , Iowa . They had two sons , Freeman (1870-1950) and Paul (1874-1923) , before moving to Clark County , Washington .

Original images were scanned as 600 dpi TIFF files on a Microtek 9600XL scanner. 100 dpi JPEG files were then added to the CONTENT database at the WSU Libraries.
