Description
A man wearing a suit and hat and carrying a closed umbrella stands on the sidewalk on Officer's Row at the Vancouver Barracks . This collection was compiled by Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Kirch and donated by her son , A. Kirch DeMartini . Betty's grandfather (donor's great grandfather) , John D . Geoghegan , was a member of the House of Representatives from the first Washington State Legislature in 1889 , and Quartermaster at Fort Vancouver from 1871-1885 . 1889 Polk Directories list him as secretary for both the St . James Branch No . 410 CKA of Catholic Knights and the Vancouver Hibernian Benevolent Society , and adjunct of GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) Ellsworth Post No . 2 . 1886 directory lists him as Vancouver City Officer , Treasurer of Vancouver and Yakima Railroad Company , Receiver of AOUW (Ancient Order of United Workmen) Harmony Lodge No . 11 . John D . Geoghegan was Born the 17th of 21 children in Galway , Ireland on Christmas Day 1842 , the son of Michael F . Geoghegan and Mary Sutherland . He came to New York with his mother and Family in 1851 . When the Civil War broke out , he enlisted in the 18th Regiment US Infantry and was captured and incarcerated at Andersonville Prison , In 1866 he enlisted in the regular army , resigning his commission in 1869 and spending some time at sea . He married Elizabeth McMullen Grubb on May 7 , 1880 .
