An SP&S crewman sits on the edge of a set of railroad tracks in Wishram , Pasco and vicinity circa 1945-1950 . Fred C . Wager was born in Minnesota on September 24 , 1879 . He worked for the Great Northern Railroad and was certified as an engineer in 1901 . He married Nellie Bates in 1906 and had one daughter , Elva Florence Wager Frink (1908-2000) . Fred transferred to The Spokane , Portland and Seattle Railway when it started operations and later became Mechanical Superintendent , a job he held until retirement in 1958 . He worked for the SP&S until he retired in 1958 and he passed away on January 7 , 1961 . John H . Wager was born in Spokane on July 18 , 1916 and found work on a track gang at the SP&S in 1937 . He was soon able to move to the job of Oiler , Hostler and Fireman in 1940 , finally being promoted to Engineer in June 1945 . Wager worked in that capacity until his retirement in 1979 . In 1948 , he bought a Speed-Graphic 4X5 press camera , took photography classes at Clark College and helped form the �Film Pack Camera Club� of Vancouver . He added 35mm cameras later and took color slides and prints . Railroad scenes were among his favorite subjects . When he died on September 12 , 2000 , he left thousands of photos , negatives and slides as well as memorabilia .

Original images were scanned as 600 dpi TIFF files on an Microtek 9800XL scanner. 100 dpi JPEG files were then added to the CONTENT database at the WSU Libraries.
