Fireworks Blast is Sudden Death
3 Killed, 15 Hurt in
Drug Store Beauty

Nampa, Idaho, July 1.—A drug
store fireworks window display exploded late today, killing a womani
and two children and injuring 15!
others, some critically.
Mrs. T. C. Daniels, 29-year-old;
barber's wife, was almost instantly
killed. Katherine Miller, 6, and Ar-
dyce Pavek, 9, diec. of their injuries
a short time later.
Seriously injured was Mrs.
George Le Belle of near-by Mar-I
sing. Hospital attendants said she
had a "fair chance" for recovery.
Jack Gakey, 19, a volunteer fireman, was badly injured.
All of the other victims were
women and children, most of whom
had been attending a beauty school
on the drug store mezzanine floor.
They were taken to Nampa's three
hospitals.
"There was a big display of fireworks in the window and apparently some of the children accidentally set them off," Fire Chief
L. T. Lessinger said.
"It happened damnably fast. In'
15 minutes it was all over."
One Huge Flare-Up.
E. L. Drake, proprietor, estimated
the damage at $25,000. On July 3,
1909, another fire started by fireworks destroyed 25 buildings here
andgaused a loss of $350,000.:
. MRS. Dora Smith, who was at the
soda fountain when the blast occurred, said the result was terrifying.
"The entire display went off almost at once in one huge explosion,
shooting all over the place," she
said.-, "The. whole front of the
buHdiKf. went out.
jr "The store was packed. Women
and children yelled and screamed,
and everybody rushed for the back
door. It must have been stuck, and
everybody was in a panic. But
finally they got it open and every
one got out, somehow."
Coroner William D. Talley said
an inquest will be held tomorrow.1
