Negotiations between the Sawmill and Timberworkers Union
and the local White River Lumber
Company over demands made by
the Union appear bright for a
settlement and continuation of operations-
The present agreement between
the local mill company and the
union expired on March 1 but the
local parties are continuing their
negotiations until March 15 which
is the date union officials say is
the deadline.
Ask Wage Raise
Listed among the demands made
by the union are foremost, a ten-
cent per hour wage increase
throughout the entire mill and
woods operation, abolishing of all
contract labor, straight 8-hour
day with forty hour week and pay
of time and one-half for all employees for overtime. Present
agreement is based upon a wage
scale of fifty-five cents per hour
for the lowest paid labor while the
overtime clause at present gives
the company right to work overtime in emergencies without the
time and one-half rate.
Outlook Hopeful
Negotiations are going through
the preliminary stage and the outlook for a settlement of some kind
without a tie-up looks good. With
the deadline set at March 15 some
action is likely in the next week.
