POLICE FIGHT STRIKERS
JUNEAU,-Alaska, June 24.—(AP)
—Nonunion men and special police
forced their way to the Alaska-Juneau Gold Mine offices to register
for return to work, and to do it
they fought their way through a
group of union men, while fists
smacked husky Jaws in a large, but
bloodless, riot. Two men were
seriously hurt.
More than 2,90 nonunion men
formed a parade and, guarded by
100 special citizen police and several U. S. deputy marshals,
marched to the mine. As they
passed the hall of the Alaska Mine
Workers' Union, which called a
walkout a month ago for better
hours and conditions, the trouble started.
Somebody, threw a tear. gas;
bomb. Somebody turned in a fire
alarm. Firemen charged in the tumult of yelling, scrapping men.
Eleven were arrested, and the parade surged on. Other attempts to
break up the registration were
halted by threatening officers and
lines of firehose, pointed like machine guns.
The company said it would not
discriminate ' between union and
nonunion men.
The nonunion men, who repudiated the strike leadership of the
unions, organized as the Juneau
Mine Workers' Association. About
300 registered for work by noon.
The company, operating one of
the largest mines in Alaska, said
operations will be resumed Tuesday.
