CLERGYMAN ASKS AID FOR BRUNO
Lutheran Ministry Asked to Rally to Moral Support of Governor Hoffman.
TRENTON, N. J„ Feb. 21. (OP)—A one-man national campaign to rally the Lutheran ministry to the moral support of the man who holds the fate
of Bruno Richard Hauptmann in his [hands was disclosed here today.
But even as ministers in various parts of the country were scanning the printed appeal, sent out in the name of Hauptmann's spiritual adviser, the Rev. John Matthiesen, word came from the governor's office for the second time within 24 hours that he has no intention of granting a second reprieve.
"We have a right to uphold those people who are interested in that (civic righteousness) and especially at this time in the governor of this state,
Harold G. Hoffman," the letter said.
"An encouraging word from Christian people to him at this time would be greatly appreciated."
Hauptmann is under sentence to walk to the electric chair the week of March 30. Unless the governor intervenes again it is unlikely he will be
alive at the end of the week.
The clergyman, who called on Hauptmann today in the death house, said the letter was sent with the prisoner's full knowledge and approval.
