ORDER SPOKANE
POSTAL SURVEY
A thorough study by postal department inspectors of the building needs
of the Spokane postoffice was ordered
late yesterday by John W. Philp,
fourth assistant postmaster general.
The study will be made to determine
whether the $790,000 appropriated for
improvements to postal facilities here
will be expended in adding to the
present federal building or in doubling
the size of the postoffice terminal
station at Howard and the Great
Northern right of way.
The study was ordered by Mr. Philp
following a conference at Washington city Friday with Charles Hebberd,
trustee of the Spokane Chamber of
Commerce, and J. Harry Davis, secretary for Senator Wesley L. Jones.
Mr. Philp told the Chronicle's correspondent at Washington information furnished him by Mr. Hebberd
and Senator Jones had shown the
importance of this survey of needs here.
The $790,000 allocation for Spokane postoffice building purposes depends on "whether money is available, which is to be determined by
the treasury department in its administration of the emergency act," Mr.
Philp said.
The Spokane outlay is one of several specified by the postoffice department for immediate action, however, and its authorization is expected
within the next two weeks.
