The Washington Shipowners' association late today announced acceptance of a 60-day truce proposed by
a negotiating committee as a means
of terminating the strike which has
halted operation of passenger and
automobile ferries on Puget sound
since last night.
W. J. Coates, secretary of the
shipowners' association, said, "We
are ready to resume operations under the truce if accepted by the
union, although it will mean a 20
per cent increase in the overall
cost of operations."
The truce proposal, it was reported, called for a wage scale
ranging from $52.50 to $112.50
monthly for an eight-hour day, 26
days a month.
The strike has tied up 25 boats
that carry an estimated 8000 persons daily on business and recreational trips in the sound area.
