Ferry Union Leader

With no indication of peace in
sight, the Puget Sound ferry strike
entered its twenty-first day yesterday as ferries of the Puget Sound
Navigation Company remained tied
to Seattle docks.
Capt. John M. Fox, buiness agent
of the striking forryboatmen, was
in Olympia, conferring with Gov.
Clarence D. Martin whose previous
settlement proposals were turned
down by Capt. Alexander Peabody,
president of the line.
Peabody explained that it was impossible for the ferry line, with its
profits totaling only $60,000 last
year, to meet increased wage demands which he declared would
necessitate an additional $175,000
expenditure annually. The unions
countered by pointing to Peabody's
own sizeable salary and to what
they claimed were "bookkeeping
losses" of the firm.
