PALOUSE PEAS
NOW LEAD WORLD
George Siegel, New York
Food Broker, Tells of Fame
of Inland Empire Product.
The Palouse country has achieved!
the honor of being the world's primary dried pea market, with the
added feature of having a product!
that wHl cook in less than half the:
time required in many cases by ordinary peas, George Siegel of New;
York yesterday told the agricultural
committee of the Chamber of Commerce. This is a factor where fuel
costs are high, he said. For quality
the Palouse led the world.
Mr. Siegel, a broker specializing in
peas, beans and cherries, told of the
growing demand for the Inland Empire product among the foreign population of the large eastern cities. Peas
are known among them as the "poor
man's meat" because of their high
protein content.
Pea Demand Is Huge.
The Inland Empire is being called
upon for many hundreds of "cars'of
the peas and it was predicted the demand . will expand. Last season the
foreign element of Detroit swung into
line in getting its dried peas from the
Palouse. New York and Philadelphia;
are good customers. In Wisconsin,
where peas are being raised for canning, the seed is secured in the Palouse country.
