Late Dr. Lloyd Underwent Perilous
Test in Heart Experiment.
TORONTO (AP).-Associates of the
late Dr. W. D. Lloyd are recounting
how he nearly killed himself eight
years ago while inventing a stimulant capable of restoring action to
hearts which had stopped beating.
Dr. Lloyd, killed recently in an
automobile accident in Rio de
Janeiro, had discovered a stimulant
which he thought proper. He
needed a human subject, however,
and chose himself. He had an assistant attach him to an electrocardiograph machine and injected
the stimulant into himself.
The cardiograph showed his heart
was stopping. He lost consciousness. The assistant examined his
eyes and saw death was near.
Almost at the point of death, however, Dr. Lloyd began to recover,
and the assistant brought him back
to consciousness by massaging his
A portion of the same batch of
stimulant killed a rabbit into which
it was injected. Dr. Lloyd changed
the formula to achieve his ultimate success.
