HOMICIDES FEW IN SPOKANE CITY, DECLARES WRITER
This City Is Ranked as
One of the Safest of Its
Size in the United States
Citizens of Spokane have reason to
be proud of the record of killings
here during the last 10 years, according to a statement recently made
by Dr. Frederick L. Hoffman in the inspector. This city, in a table compiled by Dr. Hoffman, occupies fifth
place in the lowest number of homicides reported by a group of the
larger cities of the United States.
The record shows that the safest
Place in the United States to live is
in the north and northwest, and that
more killings occurred in the southern cities. Government statistics, which
Dr. Hoffman claims as the basis of his statements, indicate that homicidal
tendencies are increasing in this country.
"Memphis, though reducing the percentage of its unlawful killings, still holds the record of the largest number of homicides of any city in the country," said Dr. Hoffman. "Savannah, Ga., comes next with a record of 42.0 out of every 100,00 people."
Spokane Beats Seattle.
The table shows that Spokane has a record of 4.8 per 100,000; Seattle has 10.7 per 100,000; San Francisco has 12.0 and Los Angeles 9.5 per 100,000. The annual homicide rate per 100,000 persons in the larger cities of the United States is as follows:
