RELIEF SEEKERS
300 Men Force Way Into
Depot, Smash Furniture
Ere Dispersed.
VANCOUVER, B. C, Oct. 13. (AP)
—Tear gas was used by police today to disperse some 300 men who
forced their way into Hamilton
hall, a relief depot on Hamilton
The demonstrators, single un-
employed transients seeking relief
in Vancouver, slugged a police of
ficer to gain entrance.
They were dispersed by police reinforcements after about a dozen
had been taken into custody. Three
police officers were cut about the
head and a number of demonstrators suffered bruises.
When the men arrived in front
of the hall, a delegation of four
first entered demanding permission
to telephone the provincial government at Victoria. A moment later
the rest of the men forced their
way through the door, brushing aside resistance.
Chief of Police W. W. Foster arrived with reinforcements, opened
the three doors of the building
and ordered the men out. Tear gas
bombs were thrown in at all openings and the men fled through
doors or broken windows, tears
streaming down their cheeks, and
scattered in all directions as police
swung their batons.
The demonstrators were armed
with chair rungs and backs. They
were in the hall about 35 minutes
and did considerable damage in
smashed furniture and overturned
files.
