Pittman—Anti-Japanese Speech Disapproved
By a Staff Correspondent of The Christian Science Monitor
Washington—The incendiary anti-Japanese jingoism of Senator
Pittman, expressed in the Senate was met yesterday with mild wrist-
slapping from the State Department, which merely denies that the
speech was an official expression of American policy toward Japan.
Observers in the capital believe the speech served several purposes the
State Department would like served, among which were:
It outshouted the pacifists and by so doing announced to Japan that
America was neither decadent nor afraid to fight.
It generated steam behind the $1,000,000,000 national defense program.
It expressed unofficially but strongly America's disapproval of Japanese aggression in China.
