Alaska Metropolis Still Under Water As Ice Dams River
FAIRBANKS. Alaska (/P)—Three-tropolis remained under water Saturday as ice jams continued to dam the flooding Tanana and Chena
rivers.
Mayor E. B. Collins said the city was in no immediate need of outside disaster assistance, but that he hoped the flood would arouse
action on the long-sought federal flood control project.
Flooded sections of the city were under from 'a few inches to several feet of water with about half the residences abandoned and homeless
householders sleeping in public buildings and hotels. The water had receded from its flood crest, set Friday.
Newspapermen, surveying conditions in this town of 2100 inhabitants, said there was no actual want or suffering.
