TEAGHERS NEED MORE PAY
Demand already exceeds supply, says Elliott.
Lewiston Normal Head Declares Educational system of State is Threatened.
Lewiston, Idaho, April 21.—"Never
in the history of the Lewiston state
normal has the demand been so heavy
for teachers," said President Elliott
yesterday.
"One hundred and twenty-five requests over the available supply have
been made and there is every indication
of a shortage of teachers unless the
pay of teachers is raised so as to be
fairly comparable to the pay received
in other lines of work. The increase
in salaries so far, the state over,
ranges from 5 to 20 per cent. Less
than a 20 per cent increase in salaries
will jeopardize the educational system
of the state, for mere clerical positions
are offering far better pay and will no
doubt tempt hundreds of teachers to
quit the profession. The situation is
gravely serious."
