Deed Dating Back
to Pioneer Times
Placed on Record
HILLSBORO, Jan. 12 (Special)—
After 82 years, a deed to property
was filed for recording here. The
deed was made out July 13, 1852,
while Oregon was still a territory.
It conveys all of block 14 and
half of block 29 in Forest Grove
from Tualatin academy and Pacific university to Sidney H. Marsh,
who later became president of Pacific university.
Forest Grove's famous "liquor
clause" is included in the deed. It
provides that "if Sidney H. Marsh,
his heirs or assigns, shall at any
time hereafter sell, exchange or
give away ardent spirit to be used
as a beverage upon the premises
or permits gaming thereon, then
these presents shall be void" and
the university may recover the
property.
The deed was signed by Harvy
Clarke, president of the university,
and sworn to before Milton Tuttle,
justice of the peace at Forest Grove.
