other considerations.
His political opponents are bewildered. They can not attack something
they can not now see. Later when
they begin to see Mr. Roosevelt move,
they will probably find it difficult to
hit a target which can shift 50 degrees in either direction.
Practical politicians and statesmen
are already marveling among themselves at the cleverness of it. They
wonder that no one thought of it
before.
Figures.
You will not find it among the published figures of the natural resources board, but the board has a
definite breakdown on its 10-year
program of expenditures as follows:
Federal public works, 3.5 billions;
state public works, 9.7 billions; city
public works, 7.6 billions; county public works, 300 millions, and low-cosl
housing, 500 millions. It makes 21.5 [
billion dollars in all. Of course,
federal government would have
lend most if not all of the money
because the states, counties and cities
are in extremely bad financial
dition generally.
Notes.
Some people grumbled because the'
president did not mention the 18,-,
000,000 or 19,000,000 on relief, but1
grouped them as 5,000,000 heads of
families. The 5,000,000 figure is correct, and from the new deal standi
point, it sounds better. The accepted I
method is to figure one head of
family for every four persons on i
lief.
The only big point which failed
draw applause as Mr! Roosevelt read
his message the other day was the
line that care of the 1,500,000 permanently unemployed is a local responsibility.
