GLIDER WRECK
PROVES FATAL
TO W. S. C. LAD
COLFAX, Wash., April 10.—
(Special.) — Critically injured
yesterday afternoon when a
glider he was flying crashed into Steptoe butte, Elmer Carlson,
Rochester, Wash., freshman student at Washington State college, died at 1:45 this morning
at St. Ignatius hospital where
he had been rushed following
the crash.
Carlson suffered a basal fracture of
the skull, brain hemorrhages and internal injuries. He was thrown from
his seat when the glider struck the
ground. The crash broke the safety
strap, it is said, letting him plunge
to the ground with terrific force. He
never regained consciousness after
being taken to the hospital.
Tried to Save Him.
Dr. Paul G. Weisman and Dr. F.
A. Bryant attended the young man,
and everything possible was done to
save his life.
Cloyd Artman, Oroville; Gene Davidson, Pullman, and Preston Swann,
Spokane; also students and members
of the Aero club, of which Artman is
instructor, had been making glider
tests with Carlson at the butte.
Carlson had been soaring 45 minutes
before the crash, and was making his
first sustained flight.
Carlson was a son of Mr. and
Mrs. Ernest H. Carlson, Rochester,
who arrived here this morning to
take charge of the body. It will be
sent to Olympia, where funeral services will be held.
Artman Saw Crash.
Surviving besides his parents is a
brother, Ellis.
Artman told officers he was soaring above Carlson, at an elevation of
2400 feet, when he saw the crack-up,
came down and landed on the butte,
but that a rush of spectators reached
the injured youth first. The glider
was not badly damaged.
