Henry Matlock, Athlete of
Early Days in Palouse, Dies
After Long Illness.
COLFAX, Wash., May 12.—Early
athletic affairs of Whitman county
were recalled here by the death early
today of Henry Preston Matlock, 69,
prominent 40 years ago as a baseball
pitcher and sprinter. Born in Missouri, he journeyed from there to Nebraska by ox team with his parents.
In 1871 he came to Whitman county
and settled on a farm near the present Matlock bridge. Later he moved
to a farm near Colfax.
Death occurred at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Manuel Lee, with
whom he had resided since suffering
a stroke five years ago. Surviving are
his widow; five daughters, Mrs. Ethel
Anderson of Colfax, Mrs. W. C. De-
Young of Thornton and Mrs. Manuel
Lee of Colfax; one brother, two sisters,
five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will
be at 2 p. m. Thursday, the Rev. C. M.
Hereford officiating, with interment
at Steptoe.
