Parabolic Arches
Title
Parabolic Arches
Description
The parabolic arches of the dam bridge have a clear span of 135 feet and a rise of 17.25 feet . Each arch barrel varies in thickness from 3 feet at the abutments to 18 inches at the crown , and is 30 feet 2 inches wide. " When these arches were poured they were divided into seven sections numbered 4 , 2 , 3 , 1 , 3 , 2 , 4 from one end to the other , and the sections poured in numerical sequence . This was to facilitate curing , and also to assure that each section of the span assumed its permanent shape and due proportion of the load. " A lattice work composed of more than a million and a half board feet of heavy timbering filled the drum gate bays during these final concreting operations. " In the foreground is Frank B . Pomeroy , a U.S.B.R . photographer in action .
