Completed Grand Coulee Dam
Title
Completed Grand Coulee Dam
Title Caption
A dam across the Columbia River at Grand Coulee appears to have been first advocated by a Coulee City , Wn . newspaper in 1892 , but the idea did not gain popular support until this proposal was published in the Wenatchee World on July 18 , 1918 . Here now raised the greatest structure of masonry ever erected by man ; 4173 feet in length , 500 feet thick at the base , and towering 550 feet above lowest bedrock . Rising to elevation 1311.08 , and overshadowed only by Boulder (726.4 ft.) and Shasta (602 ft.) Dams , it raises the water surface some 355 feet above the old river level , creating a beautiful falls of dazzling white , 1,650 feet long and twice the height of Niagara . In its great mass rests almost as much concrete as in the combined volumes of the next four of the world's largest concrete dams , (Shasta , Boulder , Friant , and Marshall Ford) : It being twice that of Shasta , and three times that of Boulder alone , or equaling the combined volumes of 20 of the largest concrete dams in the United States , excluding Boulder . Not only is Grand Coulee Dam the largest man-made structure in the world , but it is the greatest of all dams in economic value , for it will create employment opportunities and better living conditions for hundreds of thousands of people throughout the nation .
