ALASKA OPTIMISTIC ABOUT 1936 Exports and Imports Increasing; Gold Mines Reopening As Alaska enters the new year all indications point to a continuance of the outstanding improvement experienced throughout the territory during the past year. Because Alaska depends entirely upon water transportation, there is probably no more accurate index of conditions than the records of steamship companies serving the territory. They reveal an increase of at least 25 per cent over 1934 in the volume of cargo moving into and out of the territory during the year just closed. Final figures on dollar value are not yet available but they are expected to show that goods moved to the North out of Seattle alone during 1995 will show a substantial increase over the 1934 figure of $30,003,334 It readily will be seen from these figures what Alaska's trade means to business and industry in Seattle. Advance bookings and other induces now point to another record year of tourist travel to the territory. Such travel in 1935 was easily the best in the territory's history. Ships carried capacity passenger lists throughout the summer and many were disappointed in not being able to obtain reservations. The Alaska department of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce points out that while the territory's 1935 salmon pack of 5,123.981 cases is about 400,000 under the ten-year average, it had a gross value of more than twenty-six million dollars. In mining, its survey shows, virtually every district in the territory registered an increase not only in production but in discovery of new properties. During the first eleven months of 1935 gold valued at $13,134,349 was shipped out of the territory. The Alaska-Juneau mine shows a substantial increase with larger tonnage handled than ever before. The Fairbanks area has had a good year, and the output of the dredges there will be greater than any previous year. Placer mining is still the leading industry and long-time operation of the dredges is assured in the uncovering of pay streaks in places thought to have been previously worked out. Quartz mining is good practically all over the Fairbanks district. Nome has been rebuilt since the fire. The Seward Peninsula generally has enjoyed a good year, and with the Kougarak coming into production next season there
