Tape Index for Interview with Vemie Lewis 00: 10 Introduce the interview with Vernie Lewis 00:30 Came out from Minnesota at 2 yrs of age right after the war 00:40 Father was from here, folks met during the war, came out here and got on with WSU as a mail carrier, worked for 36 years 01:22 One brother, and one sister, Vemie is the middle child, sister 1 yr older, brother 5 yrs younger. 01:47 Lived at Hilltop stables growing up, original2 story house, rent was $50 a month 02:10 Father only made about $250 dollars a month 02:15 Mother didn't work, she was a typical housewife, started working when kids were in junior high/high school 02:30 Mother canned day and night, she made all ofthe kid's clothes, she had days of the week designated for certain chores 02:50 Mother was so good at ironing, that she was hired out to iron for other people, she would iron white shirts for the professors at the college for a dollar and a quarter 03:26 Had a washer, had the old-fashioned type iron: one of the first electric irons 03:51 Vernie loved Fridays because it was bake day and Mother would make soup and dumplings, could just let it simmer while baking other things 04:13 Baked 4 or 5loaves ofbread, cinnamon rolls, and 4 or 5 pies, relatives would come in so everything always got eaten 04:40 Sister got TB from the doctor that delivered her in Minnesota, she was the first baby to ever be given streptomycin 05:23 Sis had to wear a body cast for about 2 yrs, then had to wear a leg cast for 4 or 5 years because of doctors extracting bone to put in spine 06:00 Vernie went through 5 years of college but never got degree, worked her way through college, studied elementary education. Studied until midnight or I o'clock, did that for 5 years. By the time she started teaching she was "disillusioned" with her field. 06:45 She had met John, and he asked her to marry him. She decided to start her own family instead of teaching, but taught her kids education, son had a lot of memory retention problems, so she definitely doesn't regret her choice. 07:28 Has been married for 34 years 07:33 Made good living at WSU and has a good retirement to look forward to 07:51 Has worked at WSU for 37 years this September 08:01 Started working in sociology freshman year of school to make more money and get some benefits. She took classes in the summer and arranged classes around work. Working there when she met John and then got married 09:13 Took fulltime position with Prosser Research station, still with WSU, became head secretary, John became injured after being married for about a year, so they came back up to Pullman, so John could get work since he couldn't do farming. 09:54 Vernie took a job in athletics, worked there for 2 years and then got pregnant with second child. Took time off, took 6 months off with first, wanted as much time 10:20 She terminated her athletics job to spend time with baby 10:27 When she came back to work, she took a job with the Chemistry department and worked there for 29.5 years 10:40 Moved to Hulbert position due to budget cutbacks, she was a budget lay-off, department went from 7 positions down to 2. 11 :00 She bumped jobs in order to keep medical insurance and her retirement plan 11:25 John isn't working anymore, he worked with heavy equipment in the physical plant here at WSU 11 :52 He took retirement after 27 years 12:09 Daughter attended WSU and graduated in business, accountant in Portland right now 12:30 Son followed in dad's footsteps, went to heavy equipment school and got CDL 12:37 Son was told he had quite a gift for driving despite very little practice, instructor was amazed, Vemie and John were very proud. 14: 11 Instructor said he'd never passed anyone with such a high score, missed 2 on walk-through, missed 1 on the driving exam 14:26 Son now works for the largest logging company in the state of Oregon, he's their number 1 driver 15:02 Family didn't work for Hilltop stables although they lived on the property 15: 17 Stable was functioning at the time, Vernie' s house actually had nothing to do with the stables, remembers playing under the tree that is still there 15:48 All the kids enjoyed the animals, especially sis, they got to play and ride with one of the ponies. Remembers riding around the big arena, the pony was very gentle 16:46 Learned to ride bikes at 8 or 9 years old, remembers falling into the barberry bushes while learning to ride 17:11 May was a special time of year, WSU hosted a horse show at Hilltop for about a week, thousands of people came, the kids loved it because of the costumes, thought it was magical, loved the Arabian events, their costumes were the most beautiful and flamboyant, bright colors. 18:10 Property has now been sold, feels it's a shame that WSU is getting rid of it 19:10 Remembers most about growing up: sitting on the front porch at Hilltop in the summer and listening to the music being played at Bryan Hall every evening about 4 or 5 o'clock 19:36 Father had to walk the hills as a mail carrier because they didn't have cars, in the s summer, the kids got to walk with him, there were only 3 mail carriers at the time she remembers Clement French, Mr. Beasley was the president, she got to meet all of these people. She said it was a very different atmosphere than it is now. It wasn't unusual then to see the head of a department and to have a conversation with them, now you're lucky if you see one of them. 20:56 Remembers having bbq picnics outside what is now the Lewis Alumni center, then it was the barn, it would last for 2 days, people brought their own plates and silverware, but tons of food was provided, she fondly remembers the ice cream. 22:08 Remembers thinking her mother's time was magical 22:35 Campus is so much more crowded with people and buildings, she feels her time was better than now because it was so much more quiet and a slower pace. 23:27 End interview

Description | 24 minute oral history with Vernie Lewis, conducted for a Women in the West (HIST 398 course at Washington State University). Her family moved to Pullman, Washington when she was two and she describes growing up in the area. She attended Washington State College, then married and raised children. She and her husband both worked for Washington State University at various jobs, until he retired. |
