(She had prepared notes to read) Description of the farm from childhood in South Dakota. Raised corn, oats, barley, and raised cattle, hogs, and chickens. Talks about siblings, birthdays, and family history. Jobs and duties of father (farmer) and mother (homemaker). Explains reasons for moving to Vancouver, Washington. Describes schooling and schoolhouse. English was favorite subject. Her family boarded the teacher. Went to 4 years of high school at Hartford, South Dakota. Spent Sundays getting to church. Ran store for three years before bad health caused her to close it. Visited South Dakota many times; always took a different route back. Went south many winter for a few weeks. Frequently went to Yakima for the horse races. Also went to Hawaii, Reno, Phoenix, and Tucson. Describes husband's activities such as hunting and trapshooting. Proud of husband winning Inland Empire Handicap and how he was famous in the area for his shooting skills. Spent holidays with her husband's family. He had six siblings, so there was always someone having a dinner or party. Her and husband spent 100 days a year at the horse races. Been to tracks all over Northwest. Read Racing Form every day and kept track of all the horses. Talks more about her children and their lives. The eldest, Jon, farms the farm today. Jeff works at University of Idaho, but spent many years working at various television stations. Won an award from Field & Stream for catching a 24.4lb. Kamloops Rainbow Trout in Lake Pend Oreille. Pouring rain, but husband put gunnysacks over her to keep her dry. Describes involvement in Beta Sigma Pi business sorority before marriage. Held picnics and parties. Secretary ofMt. Hope Women's Club. She didn't have very good cooking skills; mother and grandmother always cooked for family. Spent most childhood working for father outside. Worked in garden, hauled hay, and herded cattle. Common for girls to work on farm. 2 40-44 44-46 46-48 49-50 When running farm with husband, had no hired help. Description | 33 minute oral history with Elda Olsen, conducted for a Women in the West (HIST 398 course at Washington State University). She describes her early childhood and growing up on a farm. After high school, she attended Nettleton Commercial College for executive secretarial training and lived in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She moved to Vancouver, Washington with her sister-in-law because her brother was stationed in Japan during WWII; there she met and married her husband. They lived on farm near Mt. Hope, Washington and raised two children. Elda worked outside the home while raising her children and remains active in her community and travels. |
