Mable Spry 5-2-92 TAPE SUMMARY interviewed by Jon W. Maple 0-21 5-7 7-9 9-11 11-13! 13!-16 Fathers parents came from Germany and settled in Idaho. Father settled in Waucanda Wa, in 1915. Many more people there now. Wanted to be a nurse. Went to school in 1 room school until eighth grade. Didn't have many friends Many chores on farm. a way of life. Just thought about it as Mother's parents came from east coast. Not sure when. Grand mother on father's side was first white girl born in spokand territory. Indians came from miles around to see the little papous Father was born in 1893 in spokane and went to the Logan School Mother born in Hayden Lake in 1891. Both families moved to Latah and they got married. Had one son. Then moved to waucanda in 1915. Had 160 acres. Stayed until 1923. She was born there in 1919. Then moved back to Latah on wheat ranch for five years then back to waucanda. Talks about how they borrowed uncle's car to move. Very few roads in 1915. Had alot of horses. Father was crossing the Columbea with his horses on a cable ferry. Some of the horses got loose and had to get them across. Talks about how she spent first two years of school in Latah. Had to walk 2! miles to get there. Talks about a spelling bee she competed in. Was home taught by mother during winter months. Story of how she skipped the third grade when she moved up to waucanda. Turned out to be very difficult. Attended until eighth gran, never went to highschool. Talks about very strict parents. No electricity of plumbing. Didn't celebrate birthdays. Most important holliday was 4th of July because it was in the summer. 16-18! 18!-21 21-25! 25!-27 27-28! 28!-31! 31!-36 36-40! 40!-45 talks about how father played basketball. Traveled on sleds. Talks about brothers and friends. She's 16 and meets her husband. No dates prior to that. Met in January married in October. Move to Grand Coulee in 1937 and have a son. Talks about experience. TKhen move to waucanda and had a child. Talks about marriage ceremaony and honeymoon talks about first child. Husband made 1.20/hr. Moved back to Tonasket, husband had small sawmill My father was born. Had to cook for 17 men. Kik th 1 sfor one year then moved to Seattle Husband started working on Ft. Laughton as a carpenter. Talks about life in Seattle. Husband went to Aladka and they got divorced. war broke out and she got a job in the ship yards. During this time got married again. Joined husband in Texas after war. He was in the Army. Then went to Missoula and the California. Talks about sex harassment in ship yards. Talks agout kids. Then moved to Tonasket. Talks about alcoholic husband. He became abusive They got divorced. Moved back to Seattle. Worked in restaurants until kids were out of high-school then began to work at Boeng. Talks about Boeng quit after 15 years. Got married a third time in 1949. him ever since. Went to Alaska in year to work. Tells stories about Talks about retirement. Married to 1976 for a Eskimos.

Film clips were created as mpeg-4 files using Adobe Premiere Elements 9 to add selected images to the wav audio files, and then converted to flv files for online display. Print documents were scanned to 300dpi pdf format using a Xerox Workcentre 5030 copier/scanner. |
