Side A: Janelle Milodragovich 10033424 Oral History Tape Summary 001- Introduction- Darinka (Dara) Milodragovich, Born March 1st, 1922 in Berane, Montenegro, Yugoslavia 004 -Early Education-First of six children 018- Italy- 026 - Marriage Three boys and three girls Completed grade school, high school in Yugoslavia Went to Cetinje, Montenegro Teacher's College, grad. 1940 Was a certified elementary school teacher in Yugoslavia Wanted to teach at the University level, so went to Florence, Italy Was at a Catholic-run university June 6th, 1945 she marries John Milodragovich Had been in Florence for 4 112 years Was 23 years old when she and John married 031 - How she met John- She was walking in Downtown Florence with an American officer who spoke Serbian. John and his Sergeant had been in an accident on the frontline the previous night, and John had been brought to the hospital in Florence. John's Sergeant, Steve, was downtown waited for John to be released when he heard Dara and the American officer speaking Serbian, so he introduced himself to them and met Dara. Later that day, he went back to John at the hospital and told him about a great girl he was going to introduce him to. John gives a no-nonsense reply, but 10 days later they show up at Dara's University, Villa Palms. 055- Timeline- Met John on January 7th 1945 (Serbian Christmas) Engaged to him March 27th 1945 Married in a military wedding on June 3 rd 194 5 Sergeant Steve is best man 060- Catholic School-Nuns were in charge of the school, although it wasn't a convent All the nuns had at least Master's degree equivalents Mother Superior plays piano and organ, Sgt. Steve sings opera Steve and M.S. would play and sing while John and Dara talked 070- Family in Yug.- For 6 years (until1946), she has absolutely no contact with family 074- Coming Over- John chases her ship all over the East Coast Lands in Norfolk, VA in March 1946 7 months pregnant, but had a good time Traveled with Italian Consul and his family Scared because they took all her papers 094- Going to Butte- Visited friends in Washington D.C. and Chicago Took the train to Montana John was a Major in the OSS 104- Butte, MT John's family is in Butte (mining town) Didn't care what the town was like Traveled by train, people met them at the station All the relatives and neighbors throwing flowers Stays in Butte 2 months before John starts with Forest Service Gives birth to Michael John on May 13th, 1946 120- John's parents- Lived at their house Everybody brought presents Didn't care what the town looked like, because they showed her a real good time. 127- 2nd Easter- John, 3 brothers, and father went to all the Easter open houses Open houses in Serbian community with food and drink End up in Elk Park - 15 miles out of town Baba (John's mom), Dara, and Mel (John's sister) are cooking Waiting, finally John calls for Dara, drunk as a skunk, speaking Ital. All 4 brothers and father Risto were loaded Women were all steamed First time since the war that all the brothers had been home 149- Butte today- Not much different today than in the 1940's Beautiful at night, and there were all kinds of parties Meaderville still existed (Berkeley Pit destroyed an entire borough) Columbia Gardens - Risto is head gardener there 163 - Phillipsburg, MT -1946 181 - English- Dara has an infant, no radio or paper, and no English skills John would be gone entire weeks He had graduated from U ofMT before the war in Forestry Lived there 10 Months Learning to play Bridge with the Forest Service ladies group Learning English at the same time The group needed a 4th, so the ladies took Dara in to teach her 193 - Magazines- Jokes she learned Bridge before she learned English Used Good Housekeeping and McCalls to help her speak Would translate recipes word by word When she tried to buy ingredients, she didn't know she could substitute for brand names, so was frustrated quite often This frustration went on for a long time 211 - Libby and Troy-There was a Forest Service Ladies club in every town John transferred to Libby in March 1947 224- Libby Dara loved Libby and Flathead Lake Didn't know why people would want to travel to Europe Happy to be in Libby, but John transferred to Troy Stayed 8 years, from Troy they go to Sylvanite (no town, only the ranger station) John would have quit F.S. but Dara wouldn't let him Mike started school in a 1 room school house with a teacher from Bonner's Ferry who was 70 years old Daughter Michelle born April 17th, 1949 260- Helena- 1955 Dara scared she wouldn't make any friends in Helena Nick, Mike's favorite uncle, married Funny nicknames Mike had for his Uncle's 283 - Bi-Lingual- Mike didn't know English until 4 112 Understood English, but didn't see how it was different from Serbian, so he would reply in Serbian 293- Transfers Lived in Helena from 1955-1957 305- Hawaii 325 - Grangeville Moved to Missoula Regional Office in 1957 1959- moved to Nez Perce Forest headquarters in Grangeville ID John transferred for 7 months to help then start a Forest Service 1960 - kids went to school Dara says she followed her husband and had a good time w/ kids Lived in Honolulu, remembers swimming and fun Back to Grangeville in 1961 John transferred back to Regional Office in 1965 -In charge of 5 state area Mike goes to U ofMT for undergrad and Law school Michelle finishes high school in Missoula, then goes to U ofMT and goes on to teach home ec in Missoula ~school 370 -Missoula John is Timber Manager for the 5 state region- 1970-1977 Retires in 1977 Dara supervises family comings and goings 388- Nick dies Nick killed on his way to Idaho in 1966 Everyone very upset 402- Europe visits Baba (John's mom) goes over for a visit in 1953, Jedo (John's dad) goes over in 1968. Dara's mom came for a visit to US in 1965 Dara's sister Donna came over in 1976 for the first time- hadn't seen her since Donna was 10 years old Dara's other sister Ljuba- hadn't seen her since Ljuba was 4 438 -Trip to Germany-Goes to Germany with Michelle in 1974 Has never gone back to Yugoslavia Family reunion in Germany - brother Novo lives there, and two sisters came up from Yugoslavia Two brothers had died in the war 474- Mike & Chris Met in the fall, engaged in February, married in March Looks like it worked out well 23 years later 512 - Subjects Was studying Serbian, Italian, French, German, Slavic and Latin Had not been taught English because it was not a primary language at the time in Europe Had never heard English until she married John Loved Italian because it came easily to her 566 - Differences Could tell regional differences in speaking in the US even when she first arrived 584- Changes Enormous change in the West Communication, transportation 595 - Learns to drive Soon after she and John are married, still in Italy SideB 00 1 - Learning to drive {cont.) Description | 54 minute oral history with Dara Milodragovich, conducted for a Women in the West (HIST 398 course at Washington State University). She talks about her childhood and early education in Yugoslavia. After obtaining her teaching certificate, Dara traveled to Italy for further education. She describes her experiences in Italy during the 1940s, and World War II. She met her husband in Italy, a GI serving in the Army, and married him in 1945. She describes coming to America and moving to Butte, Montana. She talks about Serbian communities and fitting in with her husband's family. Her family moved around the west because of husband's job with the Forest Service, but she became involved with Forest Service Ladies Club. |
