Tape Summary Jennifer Hymer May 6th, 1998 History 398 Sue Armitage This tape summary is organized according to the minutes spent on each topic of conversation \\-ith Janice Smith. 0-4 min. 4~10 min. 10-12 min. 12-13 min. 13-25 min. 25-35 min. 35-42 min. Discussion of grandparents Lash and Taveras, their origins and how they ended up settling in Oakland. Discussion of growing up during the Depression. "I figured we were getting rich when I got a pair ofbrand new shoes." Discussion of living -vvith the entire family during the Depression. Janice's mother remarries. Janice talks about her childhood and her close knit neighborhood. "Everyone knew everyone." The world enters WWII. Janice tells the story of how she learned of the bombing at Pearl Harbor. Relates how she and her friends as well as her family helped the war effort. She also recalls what she and her friends did for fun. Talks about her graduation from Cal Tech High School and the opportunities available to girls upon graduation. Discusses her mother's death and her first three months at Cal Berkeley. Daughter, Lea Ann is born. Janice's grandma passes away, followed by her dad. ''Everything was happening too fast." Daughter~ Sally was born. Family moves to Occidental to get troubled son, Robin out of the city. We discuss the lack ofbirth control as a reason why people had such big families back then. Janice gets her nurses aid certificate. Works at a convalescent hospital. Talks about the Hippie Era and the assassination ofPresident Kennedy. Discusses her decision to enter an alcohol treatment center in 1984. Talks about her fears after entering the program and how completing it was one of her proudest accomplishments. Talks about the death of her son-in-law, her adventures on the Harley Davidson and states that her philosophy on life is, "Just do your best. You've got to keep trying."

Description | 82 minute oral history with Janice Smith, conducted for a Women in the West (HIST 398 course at Washington State University). She talks about her early childhood during the Great Depression. She describes her life in a Catholic household and the impact of Pearl Harbor on the community around her. After graduating high school, Janice attended the University of California, Berkeley but left early when her mother died. She discusses her three marriages and raising her five children. While her children were young, Janice became a certified nurse's aid and worked in convalescence hospitals. She describes being a young mother during the "hippie" era in northern California, and her struggle with alcohol addiction. |

Film clips were created as mpeg-4 files using Adobe Premiere Elements 9 to add selected images to the wav audio files. Print documents were scanned to pdf format using a Xerox Workcentre 5030 copier/scanner. |
