SUMMARY I interviewed my grandmother, Eileen Hazzard for this oral history research report. At first I had difficulty getting my grandma to speak, and it is thanks to my grandfather that she finally started talking to me about her life. As you will be able to hear on the tape I had to "slyly" push the record button once my grandmother started talking and so there is no real introduction as getting her speaking was difficult. After the first initial shyness however, my grandfather and myself together were able to make her comfortable enough to hear about her childhood and her life while growing up in Seattle. I found a few things to be extremely interesting during the interview. I will give a brief overview of three of them below. 1) Approximately 5 minutes into interview: My grandmother begins speaking of the differences between Seattle now as compared to when she was a child. She speaks of the ferry taking people across Lake Washington, as well as picnicking on the beach. Also she speaks of the cars and streetcars that were around then, and of shopping for produce in Pike Place Market. 2) Approximately 25 minutes into interview: After speaking of college we get into her job at the Navy office. This then takes us into her meeting my grandfather and she proceeds to tell me about their first date and their courting there after. I believe this to be an important part of the interview because of the fact that my grandfather is such a huge figure in her life, and it was interesting to hear about how they first met and where their lives took them after. 3) Approximately last 5 minutes of interview: Amazingly enough I was able to hear about some of the types of birth control/contraceptives that were available for women. Once we began speaking of this, the topic of pregnancy and childbirth also worked its way into the conversation. I feel this to be one of the most interesting parts of the interview because my grandmother was willing to share more of her feelings on it. It was incredible to compare what a woman experienced in the hospitals after giving birth in the 1940's compared to a woman's experience today. Overall I feel that this oral history went fairly well. It was difficult in the beginning to get my grandmother to speak, but once she started talking I was able to gain great insight on what her li was like. This was a great research paper to do, because I not only learned about women living in the west, but I was also able to learn a great to deal about my grandmother life that I did not know before. \ \)~\:~_ \)·\~\~ ·-. ~~\. __ (-~ -~C\DQ \\\~ T~/4\'-,\~CR '0~\0 ~Qx"Y'\ ~ C.\1\( (I ..
