Jenn Olson Oral History Interview Side 1 Ruth-grown up when born Hel-more pals, riding horses over the plains Vancouver-lived there until married 21 1923-moved to Vancouver Lamont, WA born in by Cheney for a year Grandfather-ticket agent for 70 years, opened station railroad agent From POrtland to Seattle to Portland Oldest sister-didn't her and sister very much About 10 years older, not really, but Hel and I were still playing cowboys and Indians with the boys next door, but Ruth would get caught doing such thing. Much more sophisticated Ruth loved her just enough to be her sister and vice versa Climbed trees when mother wasn't watching House in Vancouver still standing today, still looks the same, great big house, her father built it Parents lived in Portland the last 2 or 3 years Folks bout house in 1920 for $5700, little, but well built for sale for $92,000 in 1980 appreciation value in Portland? School-always walked to school. Elementary school close as well as Junior High. and High School. Rules/Duties always had to make beds, 3 girls-oldest made out a calendar so weren't overwhelmed with chores. If someone washed dishes one night, then I would dry the dished the next day. Oldest the ruler. Did what the oldest said and the calendar. Had no animals. Elderly woman next door who was deaf had a kitty, so the kitty usually stayed at their house. Kitty always ran to Dad's lap. No matter what. Come and get your cat. Wouldn't touch it. dad-Wasn't a cat lover. Oldest-wasn't particularly into dolls, but would sew for her dolls. Helen and I would play and play. Take everywhere-Ruth was embarrassed about them. Had a wonderful childhood. Youngest sister, really good friends. only 19 monthes. Hel- 22 months. The radio would go on and Hel and I would dance together and Jitterbug and stuff like that. I would be the boy since I was older than Helen. At dinner time, we always had dishes. Usually mom Had a radio when she was a child. Remembers dad fiddling with it. Never able to be a little kid. No tv. Glenn Miller's Dance Band. Jitterbug after dinner. Had senior and junior prom. But doesn't recall anything special about them. Although she really loved to dance. mom would say, You girls just go and dance.

Description | 94 minute oral history with Imogene Hillard, conducted for a Women in the West (HIST 398 course at Washington State University). She talks about her early childhood in Vancouver, Washington, playing with her sisters, and the daily chores in her house. She attended Washington State College, where she met her husband, but did not graduate. Her husband served in the Navy during World War II, and then they began their family. She moved to Yakima, Washington and her husband joined his father's paint business and built their first house. She describes the numerous changes in Yakima over the years. |

Film clips were created as mpeg-4 files using Adobe Premiere Elements 9 to add selected images to the wav audio files.
