Callie Palmer History 398 Oral History - Mildred Palmer Summary Please note: minor complications as to exact tape locations - the machine I used to listen and summarize with did not have a tape counter mechanism. Times are approximate. Question 1: @ five minutes Tell me about your childhood: 1) Where were you born? 2) When? 3) How did the family arrive there? Mildred takes her time, but answers the questions pretty clearly in the first five minutes. She gives a really nice description of the place, and has a nice story about her mother's horse, which knew the road to the school, since all twelve siblings went to the same school. Born 1907 in Spring Valley, W A, which used to be just north of Rosalia. Mildred also goes into great detail about how houses were constructed - she has been known to doodle house plans. She also talks a bit about places around the area where her family lived before they finally moved into Rosalia. Question 2: (starts about 5-8 minutes in, lasts about fifteen) Tell me about your family: This portion takes a bit longer, maybe about fifteen minutes - she starts describing her family- her father died in the flue epidemic in 1918. Her description of his business ventures -farming and otherwise, are key because he really left the family in excellent financial shape before he died. She remembers quite a bit about her father. In this section she goes into some detail about others who passed during the epidemic. She also describes the horses she and her sister had, and where they would ride. Mildred touches on the fact that she and her sister didn't have to do any chores until after her father died, before they moved into Rosalia. Mildred had to milk the cow. She also describes school as a youngster, and piano lessons. When she was in her teens, she played the piano at the movie house. Question 3: (included in previous section) What was your favorite book? Her favorite book is The Secret Garden. Question 4: (@ 25 minutes in) Did you ever have to work in the garden? (My great-grandmother and grandmother had a beautiful garden and grove of trees) Not as a child. Grandma used to climb on the shed to read. Question 6: (@ 30 minutes in) What do you remember about Elizabeth (Mildred's sister) some details about their fights, but mostly she doesn't remember much. Elizabeth died of polio while Mildred was in high school. Question 7: (about 40 minutes in) Describe your education? Attended Cheney Normal School after graduating high school. Then taught for a year, then spent 2 years at WSC getting a degree in History. She was in the Kappa Delta sorority. Graduated Cheney 1924, taught in 1925, graduated WSC in about 1928. Question 8: (about 60 minutes in, side 2) How old were you when you were married - how did you meet your husband? Mildred was about 24 when she married, knew Cecil Palmer all her life - Palmers were from the area as well. Question 9: (about 68 minutes) When were your children born? Bill, 1932, Noah, 1934, Connie, 1939 During this section, Mildred describes quite a bit of Cecil's business ventures - owned service stations throughout Whitman County - the depression wiped him out. It is interesting to note that she refers to my grandfather's finances as his and not theirs. Gives details about the Depression's effects on Rosalia. She also can't remember too much about what her husband was like. Says he was like Bill. Says she had all three at Deaconess - gets into speculating when her kids were born.
