Topic 0-1 Intro; Name, etc 1-3 Lived in Oregon; moved to Tacoma, WA; Had one car, one bathroom; culture shock moving to Tacoma 3-5 Mother worked for a bit at JCPenney; Betty prepared dinner; Family always ate dinner at the dinner table together 5-7 High School: Overwhelming in Tacoma, had to leave a lot of things behind in Oregon; Friends, leadership positions, etc 7-11 College: In family college was what you did after high school; Few men at College ofPuget Sound due to war; Betty didn't work during the war, Family members did die in war; Met Dave (husband) on blind date; transferred to Willamette University then came back; started going together with Dave when she came back 11-17 Married to Dave; Betty went to work at a paint company; started family- Merrilee; bought their 1st house; Jeff was second child; then Richard; Jeff had to go into the hospital to have an operation; Talks about canning peaches, raspberries; etc.; 4th child-Tim; had bought property in University Place; so built house there 17-19 Never worried about children going to school; times have changed 19-22 1st child Merrilee was married; then Tim got sick with Aplastic Anemia; Merr was a bone marrow match for Tim; so family decided to have the operation; but 1 year later Tim's liver gave out and he passed away 22-24 Mother came to live with their family in the "mother in law" appt. in basement; Betty enjoyed having her mother there; when Dave retired they began going to Hawaii once a year for 20 years 24-26 Dave passed away at age of74; very hard for Betty to lose him; 26-29 Worked for a man out of Bellevue; She would knit ski sweaters; then they would be sold in stores at resorts; worked for 14 years; hobby now; once saw a sweater that she knitted in a Nordstrom; knew it was hers because there was a mistake that she had made towards the bottom that only she would notice; 29-31 talks about what her family (children) do in their careers now; how they live near her; etc 31-32 Things are different now; tv's; #of cars, etc 32-33 Had Japanese exchange students live with her for a while; 5 girls total 33-34 When she was 4 years old; she got locked into the bathroom; coiuldn't get out; her father had to come and climb in the window on a ladder to get her out 34-35 At the lake place; the old fashioned refrigerator needed ice to be put in it; so the family drove to the place to get the ice and the ice machine wouldn't stop spitting out ice; Dave was in ice up to his knees 35-36 Betty rode in a side car of a motorcycle of a teacher at the school her husband taught at; she was embarrassed because you didn't do things like that at that time 37-38 When she was young; she released the brake of the Model T car and sent it rolling; luckily a college student saw and jumped on running board and stopped the car from running into anything 38-39 She and husband rarely got babysitters; but they would go out one night just for themselves; 39-41 Talks about children: Richard was playing basketball; She and Dave went to the game a little late and saw him lying on the floor; he had bitten a whole in his tongue; kids were very involved in sports; Merr once played football and they had to take her to the hospital because she had broken her arm 42-43 Times have changed; but she has had a good life; people have luxuries now

Description | 36 minute oral history with Betty Granlund conducted for a Women in the West (HIST 398 course at Washington State University). She describes her early childhood in Dallas, Oregon and her family's move to Tacoma, Washington. She talks about the importance of family and her transition from Oregon to Washington. After high school, she went to college at Puget Sound where she met and married her future husband. They raised family and settled in the Tacoma area. |

Film clips were created as mpeg-4 files using Adobe Premiere Elements 9 to add selected images to the wav audio files.
