Tape Summary 517103 Tape I Carol Lanning Interviewed by Kortney J amtaas Side I 0-3 3-6 6-7 7-12 13-14 14-20 20-24 Talk about birth place. Carol didn't know real name of town until she was in her 50's. She was left in a horne for unwed mothers to give up their babies for adoption. In Wisconsion. Story of Adoption. Mother shows up for her husband's graduation. Walks into a hotel asks if the clerk if she knew of any babies that were being given away. The answer was yes. Until Carol's grandchildren were born she didn't even search for her biological parents She finds out she is adopted when 9 years old. Does not discuss it because of the stigma placed on those adopted and the parents. Until her 20's she never mentions that she is adopted to anyone. Discussion when she finally goes on the search. It is mainly to find out her ethnic background and heritage. They find her biological mother in Florida. They were able to make contact, her name was Lucile. Talk about why she was adopted. Lucile was 16 years old when she found out she was pregnant. That was in 1929. She was confined to her room, could only walk at night, not even her brother was told. Form first doctor's visit it was decided that the baby would be given up for adoption. 24-27 27-28 28-30 30-32 32-34 34-36 36-39 39-41 41-45 45-46 46-48 Received papers of her history, at one request of Lucile. That Carol call her. She found out that she was half-German and halfItalian in 1984. Both biological parents were first generation American. Lucile came to visit with her second husband. Carol and her mom picked them up. They stayed for a couple of nights. Carol was happy they lived in Florida. She already had a family and didn't need another one. Story of how she made her way to Washington State College in 1947. She didn't know where it was but she knew a girl who was dating a guy there. Got accepted, but so late there was no place to stay. So she rushed a sorority. Pledged Delta Zeta. Fell in love with Pullman. She met Don the first week of school. It was clear she couldn't afford to go back to school because of money. So she married Don, at 19 years of age. A sad day was in September when her friends were going back to college and she had to stay. She was married and pregnant at 20 years old. She realized that it was time to grow up. They moved to Seattle where Don got a job with Boeing. He was a WWII vet with the Navy. The year they met was his first year back. He graduated with an Engineering degree. Don then got a job with Douglas and they moved back to Southern California. Had Kris and Dawn and then moved to North Carolina. Don got transferred. 49-51 51-53 53-57 Carol leaves Don in North Carolina and takes the Children back to California. Her parents are there as well as old friends. Also St. Mathews her church. So it was like a home coming for her. She did odd jobs to support her and her children. She ironed men's shirts, typed papers and letters and even books. She also worked at the church as the youth organizer. That gave her benefits which were badly needed. Tape recorder stops working without our knowledge. The interview was being video taped.

She tells the story of her adoption and her early childhood in California. After high school, she attended Washington State College, married her first husband and had three children. She divorced and moved back to California, working odd jobs to support her children. She eventually remarried a close family friend and works for Charlton Heston. |

Film clips were created as mpeg-4 files using Adobe Premiere Elements 9 to add selected images to the wav audio files.
