About the Database:

The historical photographs which comprise the WSU Buildings Image Database were selected from various collections including (but not limited to): William Delbert Barkhuff Photographs, 1892-1921; Myron Samuel Huckle Photographs of Washington State University, 1924-1930; and two large WSU subject collections, PC-3 and PC-4. However, the images currently available online represent only a fraction of the buildings on the WSU campus and an even smaller portion of the WSU related images in MASC. Additional photographs can be found in the Pullman and the Palouse online collection. A historical overview of campus buildings can be found at MASC's History of WSU Buildings site.

Searching the Database:

Entering search terms in the box located at the top of the page will search across all of the fields contained in the database. A list of all of the buildings currently entered in the database is provided in a drop-down box. Select a building from the choices and click on the search button to see the results. Two icons (located to the right) allow for predefined searches of construction and interior images. Search results are displayed as a series of thumbnail images that may be browsed, both forward and backward. To view the larger image and its corresponding description, double click on the thumbnail. Any highlighted text in the description below each full-size image is searchable; just click. Options to return to the WSU Buildings front page, the MASC front page, the Historical Photographs page and ordering images, are provided along the top banner, as is a choice to return to your search results.

Creating the Database:

Photographs were scanned at the WSU Libraries on a AGFA Arcus II scanner as 300 dpi uncompressed TIFF files and later added to the CONTENT database as 72 dpi JPEGs. Descriptions for the images included in the WSU Buildings Image Database were researched and written by Trevor Bond. Subject and genre terms were selected from the Thesaurus for Graphic Materials published by the Library of Congress. Subject terms for individuals and building names were locally assigned. Al Cornish provided technical support for CONTENT and aided Joseph Groh and Trevor Bond in the site's design.
