About this collection

WSU Chinooks (Yearbooks), 1899-1986

These Chinooks are housed in Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections in WSU's Terrell Library.

The Chinook:

Washington State University, then the Washington Agricultural College and School of Science, began classes on January 13th, 1892, and its first school yearbook, the Chinook, was published in 1899 by the Junior Class. The second volume followed in 1901, and it has been published annually ever since. In 1926, responsibility for the Chinooks was moved from the Junior Class to the Associated Students, and then to Student Publishing in 1974. Through 1926, cover dates represented the graduation date of the Junior Class creating them, and so were off by one year from the actual publication date. In this collection, the year listed for a page is the year the yearbook was published.

The Collection:

Individual pages from Chinook volumes from 1899 through 1986 are compiled here, comprising 37992 pages over 87 volumes. They document the evolution of the Washington State University campus, activities, faculty, and student body from its earliest days through its first 95 years of existence. Yearbooks after 1986 are still available in physical form through WSU Student Publications and will not be digitized so long as they are still available for sale; contact Student Publications at 509-335-4573 for help in purchasing those. Physical versions of the Chinook volumes in this collection can be found either in at WSU Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections, or in WSU’s Holland and Terrell Libraries at call number LD5731.W58 P6.

Creating the Database:

University Archivist Mark O’English supervised the project, designed the metadata schemas, created descriptions, and designed this page. Individual pages were scanned as 300 dpi pdf files on a variety of scanners by Rhonda Anderson. Alex Merrill and Doug Lambeth provided technical support for CONTENTdm. Jeff Kuure designed the banner. Tom Brausen provided physical support in preparing the yearbooks for digitzation.  Bob Smawley and WSU’s Lewis Alumni Centre were of special help in providing duplicate copies of the Chinooks.
