These 73 images make up the Nez Perce Photographs, ca. 1877-1905, Collection. The collection comprises six separate auction lots containing original photographic prints and one glass-plate negative. The images document the lives of Nez Perce Indians throughout Washington and Idaho at the end of the nineteenth-century, and include several photographs of well-known tribal leaders and warriors such as Peo Peo Tholekt and Chief Joseph. The bulk of the images portray the subjects posed in studio settings, wearing traditional Native American dress, Western-style clothing, or a combination of both.
Other notable images in the collection include photographs taken at the 1905 unveiling of the monument at Chief Joseph’s grave in Nespelem, Washington. Two photographs, believed at time of acquisition to be of the St. Joseph Mission Church and Nez Perce Indian School in Slickpoo, Idaho, were identified in 2011 as images of the St. Francis Xavier Mission Church and Indian School on the Crow Reservation in St. Xavier, Montana, but still remain in this collection.
The photographs in this collection comprise the work of several photographers of the U.S. West and Native American life, including E.G. Cummings, F.T. Cummins, O.S. Goff, C.W. Hanson, J.A. Hanson, and Dr. Edward H. Latham.

Creating the Database
Graduate History student Nathan Sowry scanned photographic images from original prints and glass plate negatives as 600 dpi TIFF files on an Epson Expression 10000XL scanner, added 100 dpi JPEG versions of the images to the CONTENTdm database, and created the descriptive metadata for the images. Mark O'English, University Archivist and Photographs Curator, supervised the project and designed the metadata schemas. Alex Merrill provided technical support for CONTENTdm. Nathan Sowry and Mark O'English created this page; Jeff Kuure designed the page's banner.
