Over the course of Washington State University's history, numerous departmental histories have been researched and written by our faculty, staff, students, or alumni, but only in rare cases were these published outside the immediate department, or even preserved outside the department or the archives. In order to increase awareness of our history and make these histories more accessible to our departments, MASC began digitizing these in 2012 and made them available online in a full-text searchable database. The project was created through the Lawrence R. Stark Graduate Fellowship, an endowment created in 2008 to honor former university archivist Larry Stark.
Searching the Database:
Entering search terms in the box located at the top of the page will search across the full text of all documents. To read through an individual item, select Browse This Collection and then click on the appropriate item. Search results are displayed as a series of thumbnail images that may be browsed. To view the larger image and its corresponding description, click on the thumbnail. An option to return to the home page for this collection is provided in the banner.
Creating the Database:
University Archivist Mark O'English supervised the project, designed the metadata schemas, selected items for inclusion, and designed this page. Individual pages were scanned as 300 dpi pdf files on an Epson Expression 10000XL scanner by Nathan Roberts, the awardee of the initial Lawrence R. Stark Graduate Fellowship, who also created metadata, selected further items, and conducted historical research for the project. Alex Merrill and Doug Lambeth provided technical support for CONTENTdm.
In addition to the two larger university histories included in this collection, other larger books have been published on WSU's history but not digitizated for inclusion here due to copyright concerns. The most authoritative three are listed below, though many other resources do exist.
Creating the People's University: Washington State University, 1890-1990 by George A. Frykman.
The Crimson and the Gray : 100 Years with the WSU Cougars by Richard B. Fry.
Going to Washington State : a Century of Student Life by William L. Stimson.
