The 1939 flood stage of the Columbia River is diverted over low blocks in the spillway section of Grand Coulee Dam. Concrete placing, which is in progress on either side of the spillway, will be resumed therein when the flood waters subside. To the 6,330,000 cu. yds. of concrete in the structure, Consolidated Builders will add 2,700,000 cu. yds. to increase the grand total to more than 9,000,000 cu. yds. before the close of the year. Adjacent to the westerly end of the dam are the portals of the 12 pumping plant discharge tunnels which will become a part of the irrigation system that will eventually reclaim 1,200,000 acres of arid but fertile land. Excavation for the tunnels has been completed, and concrete placing will soon be started on the pumping plant foundation. |
