Finished Spillway Road |
Title Caption |
The crest of the Grand Coulee Dam spillway has become a thing of beauty. Recent removal of the false work, used to erect the 11 bridges across the 1650-foot middle section of the structure, exposed for the first time in the completed arches through which a waterfall twice as high as Niagara and five city blocks wide will plunge. Each span is 125 feet wide. The surface of the 136-mile lake was only a few feet below the concrete on which the piers for the arches rest, and 315 feet above the river below, when this photograph was taken. The drum gates, now hidden in concrete chambers directly below the bridges, will, when raised, hold back an additional 28-foot depth of storage water in the reservoir. |
