A photograph depicting a campus day celebration in front of the west facade of Van Doren . Students participated in campus day activities during the early years of WSU . The celebration held in the Spring started with work projects , such as lawn raking and laying side walks , and would conclude with a picnic . Van Doren , designed by J . K . Dow & D.Z . Hubbell was built in 1908 (at a cost of $25,000) as the 'domestic economy ' building . At the time it was the only structure west of Chicago devoted entirely to Home Economics courses . Named for Ms . Nancy L . Van Doren (the first building on campus named after a woman) professor of English and Librarian at the start of WSU .
