Description |
Helped to build Spokane from its beginning Here are shown pictures of some of those hardy pioneers who put their faith in Spokane in the days when it was a hamlet by the falls -- and lived to see that faith justified. Two of them are living, Henry W. Greenberg, at the upper left, with Mrs. W. W. Stillman, at his right. Mr. Greenberg is now a prosperous farmer residing on Pleasant prairie, but in the early days was one of the first editors of the Chronicle. Mrs. Stillman resides in the city. She is a daughter of the late Rev. H. T. Cowley, who was a missionary to the Indians in the early 70s and who was one of the early editors of the Chronicle. In the lower pictures are, left, J. J. Browne, one of the first real estate operators here; center, James N. Glover, the"Father of Spokane" the man who platted the townsite; and at the right, A. M. Cannon, who established the first bank here. History records Messrs. Browne, Glover and Cannon were founders of the Chronicle. |
