Old Wallula finds champion Spokane man, who lived there as boy, thinks its history should be recognized with monument--recalls importance in pioneer days . A proposal to erect some sort of marker at the old site of Fort Walla Walla, near the present town of Wallula, is made by A. S. Johnson, E27 Nora avenue, who grew up in the district and recalls much of the early history. He advances the claim that the original Wallula was the first settlement in the Inland Empire. He believes the old Mullan road was built to connect Fort Benton on the Missouri river in Montana and Wallula on the Columbia in Washington. Wallula, he asserts, was the first shelter the Whitmans found and has other historic claims to recognition. is letter to the Spokesman-Review, outlining his argument for a marker of some sort, follows: |
