Fed 11,242 service men Great record made by "chicken dinner" canteen. |
Description |
Ellensburg's famous "chicken dinner" canteen will close permanently on November 11, ending its record with a total of hot meals or lunches served to 11,242 soldiers, sailors and marines. The regular menu for hot dinners was roast chicken with dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, homemade rolls, jelly, apple pie and cake. The women boarded the trains and went as far as Easton in order to serve the service men without delaying train movements. Men from all over the country have written the canteen thanking them for the excellent service done and commenting on the quality of food served. |
