Better Price.
WASHINGTON STATE COLLEGE,
PULLMAN, Wash.. Feb. 9-Hybrid No. 128, a cross of little club and
Jones fife wheat, first distributed by
the state college 12 years ago. has a
four and one-half bushel better yearly average than Red Russian, the
standard Palouse country wheat for
over 30 years, according to extensive yield tests
by E F. Gaines and other
cerealists of the experiment station
covering a period of 11 years.
Grades as White Club.
Mr. Gaines states that hybrid No. 128, in the Portland termminals, graded as No.1 white club. while red russian went in as No. 2 red Walla Walla.
The spread in between the two
vantage. This, coupled with .the in-
reased yearly yield, average, indicates
that Red Russian must soon give way
to the college hybrid in popularity
among the farmers.
Make Exhaustive Tests. Planting tests beginning in August and running through to December 1 were made to determine which of these two wheats would yield best. Hybrid No. 128
of August planting, a date sufficiently late to escape the summer "smut showers,"yielding 37 bushels an acre, while Red Russian planted on the same date returned 20 bushels. The hybrid wheat maintained its lead throughtout the early, medium, and late plantings, yielding its maximum 44 bushels, from the planting on the same day yielding 30 bushels. December 1 plantings of the hybrid dropped to 20 bushles, against 13 fro Red Russian.
