Mrs. Simpson To
Dodge Cannes Crowds
CANNES, France, Wednesday,
Dec. 16.—OB—Mrs. Wallis War-
field Simpson's hosts, finding it
impossible to spare her from public curiosity, arranged today to
break the tedium of her solitude
in their villa.
Members of the household said
Mrs. Simpson probably would not
be seen outside the hill-top villa,
Lou Viei, of Mr. and Mrs. Herman L. Rogers of New York for two weeks.
Rogers disclosed that earlier
plans to release Mrs. Simpson's
bodyguards from duty had been
temporarily abandoned. He said
the guards would be maintained
"indefinitely."
"Is Mrs. Simpson always going
shopping with detectives?" he was asked.
"That depends on the attitude of
the people of Cannes," Rogers replied. "It was necessary yesterday."
When she ventured into town
yesterday it was necessary to call
detectives to disperse crowds
which surrounded the fashionable
shop where she bought handkerchiefs, hosiery and gloves.
Mr. and Mrs. Rogers prepared
a calendar of entertainments to
help Mrs. Simpson while away the
lonely hours until, eventually, she
may go to meet the man who gave
up his throne to wed her.
The Cannes telephone exchange
disclosed that former King Edward and the American - born
woman speak frequently by longdistance, with a special operator to
handle their calls and make sure
their conversations are not overheard by eavesdroppers.
