Experiments by Dr. E. F. Gaines
Receive International
Recognition
World-wide recognition in the field
of phytopathology is coming to Washington State College as the result of
work done at the local agricultural ex-
periment station by Dr. E. F. Gaines
in developing smut resistance in oats.
Reprints from Dr." Gaines' article, "Resistance to Covered Smut in Varieties
and Hybrids of Oats," were sent to
foreign countries as well as throughout
the United States.
Although the paper went abroad
only three weeks ago, replies are already coming in. One of the most
significant was received Monday from
Dr. D. Atanasoff of the faculty of agriculture, institute of phytopathology
of the University of Sofia at Sofia,
Bulgaria. The letter requested that
two pounds of the seed of the Markton
and the Red Rustproof varieties of oats
developed by Dr. Gaines be sent to
Bulgaria for trial there.
According to Dr. Gaines, European
pathologists have never been able to
develop smut resistance, and believe
that it cannot be done. "If the oats
from the State College make good in
the Bulgarian tests, and the old-world
! pathologists are convinced, it means
| international fame and reputation for
'the college here," said Dr. Gaines. He
is anticipating many more replies and
from foreign countrues in the near future.
